Walking around in someone else shoes
It's been quite a while since I last blogged. We've had a big move and life has been non stop for quite a few months. The change made life tough for the first few months, new people getting to know my son, going through initial impressions which I hope have changed over time.
As my son is getting older I've noticed that he leaves some behaviors behind. Before we moved, when he felt secure and happy in his school and home environment he had begun to stress a little less and was a lot calmer. Our move meant he found himself in a strange new environment, miles away from his accepting friends and teachers and in a world that took a bit of time to get use to his little quirks! I'm pleased to say that he's settle down amazingly after a terrible first month and on reflection it was his struggle with wanting other kids to accept him and his foibles that made life hard for him to begin with.
He's a very sociable little chap, he loves having plenty of friends about and so coming to a new school and not knowing anyone, and where no one wanted to play his games was hard for him. This made him 'act up' even more than he usually would and alienated him even more. I always like to talk about how having a spirited child impacts me and so I'm sharing about how hard I find it when other kids talk about him to me. Kids can't help not understanding another child's behaviour but I've always tried my best with my boys to explain why some one might have 'shouted at a teacher' or 'run out of a classroom'. It helps my boys become more tolerant of others behaviours and means they are less likely to judge someone without trying to understand them first. I hope my boys manage this throughout life, I know that if more parents viewed my son in this way maybe he wouldn't have had such a hard time fitting in when we first moved.
